Interview with SERPENT ASH
Fuh , feels like Kofee with Kapnap .uuhhh..late night with gapnap and Serpent Ash?..uhh..anyway ..
gapnap.com proudly presents upcoming power metal band , SERPENT ASH !
Okayyy people , so this will be my first time interviewing some real SHREDDERS from our area (Petaling Jaya) .hopefully this will inspire some of you wankers out there.
My friends , Teik hoe and Faizal from the band Serpent Ash . How long we know each other ?like 3-4 years ? yeah..anyway , this 2 shredders are RISING…so guys if you happen to bump into one of their gigs , do yourself a favor and get your ass to check em out.

Faizal with a RG1527

Teik Hoe with an Ibanez K7
Interview:
gapnap : Hi Shredders , its great to have REAL shredders giving their input on gapnap.com. Its an honor .
So guys , can you tell us a lil background on Serpent Ash , like what genre you guys play and how you guys got together ?
Teik Hoe :Thanks for letting us be part of your kickass interview. This truly an honour to be interviewed by a great shredder such as yourself.
We are big fans of power metal, so that’s the genre we chose for our music, I guess! Faizal and I were actually friends since secondary school, though we didn’t play really play guitar back then. We’ve been wanting to form a band for the longest time actually, and never got around to it. More like never had a chance to do it coz we didn’t know where to find the other band members. It was pretty much just the two of us with nowhere to go. Anyhow I was introduced to this boy,Kevin Low, who plays drums, and who also happened to like the same genre of music. Wait a minute, I think you were the one who introduced him to me, or was it the other way round? Lolz. It was around April 2006, where we finished writing our first song. And we sent it to Kevin, who liked the song a lot so we offered him if he were like to form a band with us.
As for the band name, it’s kinda embarrassing/lame actually. We were having drinks with Eugene and Zachy and gang, and they were talking about bass woods (typical!). Zachy mentioned ‘Swamp Ash’ and Faizal, back then not really knowing much about gear and stuff, misheard it as ‘Serpent Ash’. Well it sounded kinda cool/epic so we decided to adopt it as our band name.
Faizal: We play power metal. We’ve known each other since high school in Anderson, Ipoh.
gapnap : That is great , what guitars and setup are ya’ll currently using (for live shows and recordings)?
Teik Hoe :I use an Ibanez K7 guitar (Dimarzio Evolution 7 on the bridge and Air Norton 7 on the neck) and a BOSS GT-6 I bought second hand from Kelly of Alcentric sometime ago. I use this rig for live shows but I’ve yet to use it for home recordings though. At home I usually just mic up my Roland Microcube only because I’m too lazy to use the GT-6, with all the cables lying around cluttering my room and what not. Hopefully one day we’ll get to go into a studio and do some REAL recording someday..ehehe.
Faizal: I use an Ibanez 7-string RG1527. DiMarzio X2N-7 for both neck and bridge pickups. For live shows, I run it through a BOSS GT-8 multi-effects processor through whatever amp the venue provides. In terms of settings, I mainly rely on the GT-8’s “5150 Drive” amp sim for rhythm and the “Edge Lead” (some Hughes and Kettner amp sim, I think) for lead.
For recording, it’s the same. I just plug the GT-8 into my soundcard’s direct-in and record.
gapnap : What do you feel about your 7 stringer guitar and setup? Does it play a BIG ROLE (neck thickness/comfort) in your playing ?
Teik Hoe :I’m really happy with the K7, the back of the neck is pretty flat and although not super thin, the neck is ergonomically designed. Although the neck is wide it doesn’t feel overwhelming to our small Asian hands. We sent our guitars to Tham <0122350670> for setup and he does a really good job. Action is low but not too low to the point it’s hard to bend/vibrato.
And yes I would say it plays a very BIG ROLE in helping my playing. Unlike you, who seem to be able to shred on any chunk of wood, I am very dependent on playing a well setup instrument to minimize the slop, hehe… And what’s more, we always expect to be able to play at only a fraction of our abilities for live shows. So, better safe than sorry!
Faizal:Yes, definitely. Especially the low B, hehe. On a serious note, both our guitars are set up by Tham (his work is top-notch). Low action and a thin neck are absolute necessities for me. Without that, it’ll be pretty much impossible for me to be able to play both rhythm and lead comfortably.

Serpent Ash and friends at Lowyat plaza , Winner of WCG battle of the bands !
gapnap : Tell us more about your song writing , How you get inspired and where you get ideas for those killer licks ? Oh yeah ! How often you guys practice anyway ?
Teik Hoe :Inspiration normally comes from just listening to good ol’ power metal. Well, sometimes ideas do come from other genres as well. You never know when u can get a good concept out of a song, regardless of it’s type.
As for licks/melodies it mostly revolves just fiddling around with the guitar, utilizing whatever theory knowledge which may help.
I don’t practice as much as I should, ashamedly! Most of the time I just keep playing our material over and over again till it just sinks into muscle memory. And that’s not to say we don’t make mistake over and over again..argh!
Faizal:Teik Hoe and I handle the song-writing for the band. Sometimes we collaborate and sometimes we just write on our own.
For the collaborative tracks, we’ll write individual parts and try to arrange them in such a way so that there’s actually a song and not a bunch of random riffs and chord progressions. Sometimes we succeed, sometimes we don’t. Hehe.
For songs that we write individually, we’ll pretty much come up with a complete song and just demo it to the rest of the band.
In terms of inspiration and ideas, we just try to write stuff that sounds like power metal.
Please don’t ask about practice. Whatever it is, it’s not often enough!
gapnap : Haha, I thought you guys get inspired by DOTA or warcraft or something , since its like super epic .
anyway , from the way you guys play , its like you guys practice 7 hours a day or something .Its cool to know there are shredders who can make it without practising
haha
Oh yea , Who are your influence? Guitar heros and stuff
Teik Hoe :Haha! When it comes to influences, I would say the guitar heroes are usually not in the bands that we like..lol! I was very much into Alexi Laiho’s songwriting style and his solo composition, however not a big fan of his heavy picking style though. Lately I’ve been into Kiko Loureiro’s awesome technique and style as well. Although I like him a lot, it doesn’t mean I’m influenced by him, don’t get me wrong! It’s hard to catch stuff from great players like that. And then there’s of course there’s Yngwie Malmsteen, who has the tastiest vibrato ever and he does write great melodies/songs.
As for bands I really like Gamma Ray. Faizal introduced me to Kamelot, Rhapsody of Fire and Blind Guardian whom I find write awesome songs with neat arrangements. Hopefully someday we’ll be able to emulate such epic song arrangements.
Faizal:In terms of bands – Blind Guardian, Rhapsody of Fire, Gamma Ray, Kamelot, Helloween etc.
For guitarists, my heroes would be: Malmsteen, Rusty Cooley, Luca Turilli, Kai Hansen, GapNap v2.0 (you’re the best, bro!)….
gapnap : What the? gapnap ? haha..i think more like you guys are my guitar hero lah ..
Anyway , any plans on releasing an album/EP in the future?
Teik Hoe :Well we plan to produce a short EP someday, possibly consisting 5 or 6 tracks. We haven’t gotten around to going into a studio for a proper recording though. The idea of recording with a producer/sound engineer is nerve wrecking, what not with the amount of mistakes we’re gonna make! >.<
Faizal: We’ll see how it goes.
gapnap : Wow , that will be something we all can look forward too ..Serpent Ash’s EP..any Advice for the next power metal shredders ?
Teik Hoe :Er, not really in a position to give any advice to the younger power metal shredders who are better than me. Kids these days are getting incredibly good! Power metal of today is way faster and more technical compared to the power metal of the past. I recently saw this Power Metal band, Cellador on YouTube and yeah, that’s a pretty good example of how power metal bands are like today.
Faizal: Be epic.
gapnap : Okay bro . thank you for your time . you guys rock ! Its an honor to have you guys on gapnap.com Hopefully we will hear more about you guys in the future. Serpent Ash FTW !
Faizal and Teik Hoe : You’re the best, bro! Good show wei! *shakes hands*

you can contact serpent ash at uptheash@gmail.com . I am sure they will be more than happy to play for your event

I’ve heard their stuff. They’re just pure technical mindless shredders.
None of the music stay/registers in my head.
They need better song writers.
Not to say they can’t play… but… wanna shred also, at least do it with a song that could stay in the head.
All the songs sound the same to me, just mindless arpeggio wanking.
Sorry if I sound harsh, but that’s just how I felt about their music.
Yes I do appreciate a good shred song but it has to have a logical flow and ‘storyline’
Mindless shredding just cannot register in my head.
June 20th, 2008 at 11:26 am
bro , i see where you are coming from ..
you see ,composing a song that could stay in the head ..is probably the most challenging task for a musician ever
even big Giants like steve Vai , Guthrie ..out of the 10 songs in their album ..not all stays in your head also right ? maybe 1 or 2 only..you getting my point?
Or even stuff like BBking , SRV ..not all of their songs are super great right ?
i personally like Heimdall..if Serpent Ash isn’t working for you.. fine ..we respect your opinion
they are very new in the scene , give them some time for the band to mature and grow ,then they will be kicking ass in the future with that song everybody wants to remember
anyway , thanks for the comment.Looking forward to hear your stuff too !
cheers !

serpent ash FTW ! *shred*
June 21st, 2008 at 2:40 am
nah dont think so guitarlamer. probably their music is not your type, but i find their musics are great. and tracks such as At The Gate of Valhalla and Heimdall could easily stuck in my mind.
And their music does have a storyline, its not just some midnless shred all the way showing speed and such
anyway, they’re music are my type, Serpent Ash FTW!! :p

EPIC Interview… =P
guitarlamer sounds like one of Serpent Ash’s member playing a prank lolx. Sounds like one of the practical jokes they would play lolx.
If not… I disagree with the mindless shredding comment. =D
June 22nd, 2008 at 6:23 am
Xien ..i feel the same..sounds like teko ;P
June 22nd, 2008 at 3:16 pm
er..i swear the first comment was not posted by me!
>.<
June 22nd, 2008 at 3:47 pm
I agree with guitarlamer, because of these musicians. The Malsysia music is still in stone age. Just because u are well known and many actually knows you. Everyone kisses you guys ass to take good care of your feelings.
However, in reality your music is mindless. There is no direction in your music. What you play is only pure shredding. You sound like the retarded Dream Theatre.
Music? What i hear in your songs is only Appregio;s with drumbeats.
And gapnap,
Even though you have a point. But bear this in mind:-
NOT ALL MUSIC CARRIES THE SAME PROGRESSION. Just compare any 2 songs from Joe Satrani. Some of it sucks, but does the whole album sound the same?
Sorry if i sounded harsh, but these are the people who are very narrow minded towards music. And because of this, your growth will be very limited.
However, I would really love to see how much you hate this post and make yourself worthy. Maybe in time to come i can get to hear “Serpent Ash” live somewhere with different materials. Or maybe not. It will just end up in the indie scene forever.
June 22nd, 2008 at 5:30 pm
thats becoz u probably dont like power metal, and you find it no direction, mindless, bla bla bla… as a power metal lover, i find their songs interesting.
and are malaysian music still in stone age? there’s a large variety of music out there, and many interesting bands as well.
and for your information, i dont know any band mates of this serpent ash, so its no ass kissing. i’m just a friend of gapnap, listen to their songs in myspace and give comments accordingly to my taste.
anyhow, i just wan to say they’re good, and this what power metal is
June 23rd, 2008 at 2:20 am
Wow… we’re the reason why the Malaysian music scene SUXXORZ mou. I feel honoured that powermetalsux thinks we have such a big impact.
Thank you. Thank you. I’d like to dedicate this post to all of you who helped us get to where we are now. There’s too many to mention but you know who you are.
Again, I’m honoured.
…wait. You’re telling me it’s not a compliment??
/doh
June 23rd, 2008 at 3:22 am
I’m happy for you if you are able to make it up to the scene. I also agree that the scene is improving. What I’m implying is the approach towards the music. Even DT has their own mellow song!
Teko and Faizal, you guys are great players. Don’t get me wrong, it is the approach towards the music that is unhealthy. Perhaps you guys prefer to go all-in for Power Metal. I have no issues on that. But I’m still entitled for opinions.
PowerMetalLover,
I’m a big fan of DT. What differs Serpent Ash from them is the approach.(no comments on skill wise.) I also believe that if Serpent Ash were to take a wider direction they could be further up at where they are now. Also, learn to argue with facts instead of going “thats becoz u probably dont like power metal, and you find it no direction.” If you have the mentality of 3 years old you probably should start drinking milk again.
Maybe, that is what Power Metal is all about. But music is all about feel to me. Perhaps my previous post sounded too harsh. You guys worked hard for the materials, and you deserved respect no matter what kind of material is produced. Learn to take criticism constructively.
June 23rd, 2008 at 3:51 am
powermetalsux,
i don’t like power metal, i don’t like progressive metal either. to me, its all just noise. but i respect the opinion of fans of each genre and therefore refrain from critisizing the band’s style of songwriting.
besides, if they were to cater to a wider audience, there will definately be flak about them being a sell-out just to go commercial. at least they’re true to their roots and are trying to bring the power metal genre in our local scene to greater heights.
the points you raised earlier were very subjective, everyone has a different opinion on what constitutes mindless music. it is uncalled for to label people as 3 year olds and shoot flaming arrows here and there, if you expect people to engage in a constructive debate at a mature level, please do so yourself too.
June 23rd, 2008 at 4:14 am
Ok I think this should stop. To all the people who defended Serpent Ash, I would like to express my gratitude and thanks to you.
To powermetalsux,
No one can blame you for what you said as everyone is entitled to their own opinions anyway. No one can force you to like a certain type of music and neither can anyone force us to play a certain kind of music. If I said I wasn’t taken aback or just a bit annoyed by your earlier posts I would be lying but hey, you have every right to say what you want to say. For that we thank you for your criticism. Not promising if we’ll change our style though.
Cheers
June 23rd, 2008 at 4:25 am
yeah i agree ..its a pointless arguement ..
its like powermetalsux wants orange juice and hate apple juice and we are trying to make him like apple juice ..
uh..i am too tired for it mou…
powermetalsux , you can play with yourself okay ?
anyway , what the hell is http://www.etc.com (your link)
link us your real blog lahhh..:)
June 23rd, 2008 at 5:49 am
Whoever out there bashing other genre is either stupid or an idiot. Opinion is opinion but when saying other genre is noise, so is your genre to other genre, I like listening to power metal but playing it I don’t like but powermetal is always the one that bring me to playing shredding guitar.
And serpent ash rocks!!!
Regards

Wah… what a stirrrrr…
I don’t particularly like/dislike a genre of a song.
I will just simplify this as, a good song is a good song.
If I can remember the song, stays in my head, I like the melody/flow, then it’s a good song.
If it doesn’t do any of those, then it’s not a good song.
Good and bad songs can come from heavy metal, power metal, hardrock, blues, ballads, jazz, etc and the likes.
We just strip the genre label from the band and just ask ourselves which song actually inspire/motivate/touch you, simple as that.
As far as I can tell, none of serpent ash’s music has managed to do it for me, so I still stand by my original opinion, they need better song writers.
I don’t think being labeled a shredder is necessarily insulting. It can be a compliment if you’re a melodic shredder with a good shred song. Most people dismiss Yngwie Malmsteem as being a mindless shredder but I digress, because at least he has heavy neoclassical influence and hence a blend of classical and modern metal makes him unique, and he has pieces that stay in my head.
See, I am not anti-shred, just anti mindless shredding.
There is good shred music, and there is bad mindless shred music.
Even Michael Angelo Batio’s ‘No Boundaries’ is a good melodic shred piece that still stay in my head, I can remember the flow of the song.
June 24th, 2008 at 7:15 am
well …all i can say for Serpent Ash is ..
you can never please everybody in the world ..
so its okay mou..you guys have plenty of supporters …don’t let anybody bring your music down and Keep ROCKING!! opps..Keep POWER METALING !!!
June 24th, 2008 at 8:04 am
To guitarlamer/powermetalsux:
I respect (and appreciate!) the fact that you have actually taken the trouble to listen to our songs and to post your comments here. I remember that Matthias Bamert (one of the MPO conductors) once said: “There’s no better way to thank a musician than to listen to his music.”
I must say that I was amused when you wrote “[j]ust because u are well known and many actually knows you. Everyone kisses you guys ass to take good care of your feelings.”
You give us too much credit because we are NOT well known! Probably only 100 people actually know of us… well maybe now, 101…
We have a simple philosophy when it comes to songwriting in Serpent Ash: we write music that we enjoy playing, in the style that we enjoy listening to.
There are bands in the underground scene whose music I do not enjoy. But I would never, ever, tell them that they need better songwriters on the basis of my personal preference.
I am free to have my own opinion. I am free to express it. However that gives me no right to be discourteous or impolite when expressing my opinions. If I have nothing nice to say, then I would rather say nothing at all.
I doubt you meant to be offensive when you say we need better songwriters. But, Teik Hoe and I being the songwriters, can’t help but feel offended because we feel as if you are denigrating our work.
I know you also mentioned something about learning to take constructive criticism.
I think an example of constructive criticism would be: “The tempo of Song A is too fast, it makes the melodies sound forced.” -OR- “The verse in Song B does not sound tight because the drums are not accenting the same beats as the rhythm.”
It’s constructive because it’s specific.
Mr X: “I don’t like Song A.”
Me: “Why?”
Mr X: “There’s no direction to the song.”
Me: “Erm….”
Mr X: “There are too many different parts. I can’t even figure out what the chorus is!”
So if Mr X had just said “There’s no direction”, there’s nothing that I can do as a songwriter because I have NO CLuE what he’s really talking about (lack of an identifiable motif? the chorus sounds too much like the verse?). But if he specifies why he feels there’s no direction, then at least we’ll both be on the same page. At least then I can sit down and figure out what to do about it.
I think I can safely say that you don’t like our songs. Perhaps if you are interested, we can discuss what exactly is it about our songs that you don’t like. Our email is uptheash@gmail.com. We’d be more than happy to discuss…
June 26th, 2008 at 5:10 am
Well said, Faizal. =)
Though, how BoM or ATGoV failed to stick into their heads is beyond me. =D
I’m entitled to my opinion too, eh?

Now, that sounded familiar.

Must be a drummer thing coz a certain studio owner made the same remark.

June 28th, 2008 at 12:51 pm

Btw, it’s Kevin Lau…well, not like you give a shit anyway…
But not like i think you give a shit also

Didn’t blame you also. Replying to BC mah
May 27th, 2011 at 9:31 am
all these about shredding is an art. An art u like or not.But i agree with some that pointless shredding is … pointless, it’s an enjoyment only for the guitar player who’s playing it,others don’t understand it,because shredding has no melodies, can u remember all that you play? I shred too, but not for myself, for the listener, and it should be heart piercing and that will stick to your head.Tomorow I’ll still play the same shit again, cos I will remember that solo again.
So please write some stuff that I will remember always. But don’t let my comment spoil your shredding because thats what shredding is all about.
Thaks pals.
