..On Speed
Oh yea , shredding is all about SPEED right ?
..no
i get questions like ..
“how do I increase my speed?”
“Now i can do it clean at 160bpm , but i am sloppy at 180bpm ..how do i work on this?”
*smacks head*
aihhh..firstly ..i’m sure most of you know that moving from 16nps to 18nps doesn’t make you a better guitarist
just faster ..and faster and faster ..and in the end you will end up like this …
wank to the max..
In fact, you’ve just wasted 3 months of your practicing time , you could have worked on something better..such as song composition skills , hearing , theory or something…
Anyways , going back to speed. Do you notice , once you’ve past a certain “speed level” …lets just say “ 15 notes per second” or something
Most People just don’t give a shit anymore ?
Such as, if I were to ask you ..who is faster , Yngwie or Vai ?
Your answer will probably be ..”erm…yngwie maybe ? (but after Vai fans give you a beating, you’ll say) ..but who cares .. both of em’ are Guitar Heroes”
People who gives a shit and compare speed between guitarist are noobs
Ok , here are some directions to master ..SPEED .
focus on this ..
1.Control
Ok , Speed without Control , is nothing ..you are still a shitty player without control ..
I’ve seen some players playing it really good at 180bpm , but if we adjust it a lil bit slower to 160bpm ..they screw the whole thing up..
Basically , being in Control of your speed means Being able to execute a particular riff perfectly at any timing before your speed limit ..
2.Consistency
When we solo on stage , we get high while we shred and you start to play faster and faster ..and slightly run out of timing ..most of the time it will sound ok and you will give the excuse of its an IMPROVISATION , or , its FUSION/JAZZ Timing or whatever..
but hey , when you are going for a recording session ..things are different you know ? every single mistake will be heard …you gotta nail it at the EXACT timing .
how to practice control and consistency ?
well , I am a nerd guitarist ..which means I use a metronome ..went from scratch , boring shit ..yea ..
I know many of you are sick of the ..“use a metronome” advice..yea..i am getting bored of it too..
A metronome requires you to FOLLOW HIM ..which means , the metronome is the leader , you are the follower ..metronome says , FAST 180 BPM , means you go 180BPM , metronome says , SLOW 60BPM , means you go slow..
The concept is , you need to be a FOLLOWER to master control..
This is gonna sound old , but ..There is no shortcuts , you need to be a follower (use metronome) to master SPEED control and consistency .. If you are lazy shit , what you can do is to make the practice experience a lil bit more interesting…
the method , found out by random
The other day , I was fooling around with my Vox AD100 with DA ..
we fooled around with the effects ..
and we found out a new way of practicing speed..
by using DELAY
set it at 2 seconds (depending on your riff) , play it once , when the delay comes , harmonize it , then play back the original riff and so on ..repeat it..
set it to 1.8 seconds , then 1.6 seconds , try different timings ..
much more fun and interesting , try it ..
you practice both , control and consistency .. plus, you get another reason to buy an amp with shitloads of effects or a crazy delay pedal .
