It has been a long time since i posted a guitar lesson , i realized my last 10 post was all wankerish post..let us get back to track and keep our lesson short and sweet

So many of you will probably wonder , how do i improve improvisation ?

also similar to “how do i improve my solos” or “how do i make my solo sounds nicer ?” (Malaysian style of asking)

Ok listen up , this is THE WAY THE TRUTH AND THE SHRED

the secret of making your solos sound nicer is …

to choose your notes reallyyy reallyyy reallyyyyy reallyyyy nice

If you’ve been learning from the internet , you may come across stuffs like phrasing , beautiful mature selection of notes ..something like that ..

or something like ” i can see how good a player is , based on how well he chooses his notes”

and yes , this is true ..(also applies for pianist , violinist , saxophonist etc etc etc )

How you separate the pros and the noobs , is not by the technique and speed ( sorry to disappoint you )

but by how a player chooses his notes , compose his solos , and also his dynamics and arrangement .

So the thing about Guitarist is , we are very very very very spoiled with …

a) distortion

b) effects (phaser , flanger)

c) Floating Tremolo and divebomb .

d) Shred and speed

e) Pentatonic scale

f) Bends and other related techniques

g) wah-wah pedal , the ultimate cheat

well , i like to spoil myself with french coffee..yummy..tasty.

GUITARIST ARE SPOILED BRATS

whenever a guitarist gets a “solo spot” in the song ..we tend to do dive bombs , shred and sweep with arpeggios , wank some effects in , pentatonic scale bends and so on ..WE DO NOT NEED TO SELECT NOTES BECAUSE WE HAVE SO MANY THINGS TO COVER UP AND TO CHEAT !

so , those stuff kinda keep us away from learning and practicing “mature notes selection”

We guitarist think  ” why do i need to learn how to select my notes?  use the pentatonic box , do some bends , shred a lil , end with a dive bomb . settle my 1 minute epic solo  “ sounds like a good plan eh ?

and then , later we start to think ..”damn i suck , why my solo sounds the same” and then bingo , you found gapnap.com

That is why , pianist and saxophonist are wayyyyyyy better than us in terms of hearing and selecting notes . why ? piano and sax has less bullshit technique they can rely on their solo . they are FORCED to select their notes like a pro .

****So the trick is simple , focus less on all the fancy showoff stuff . And start focusing and practicing on choosing your notes .

1)  Start playing by seeing the NOTES , not the DOTS .

2) Start Soloing on simple songs with CHORDS (not riffs) . Eric Clapton  – Wonderful tonight , Any Christian Worship Songs by Don Moen , Alicia Keys – If i ain’t got you are the first few that comes to my mind ..

3) Take away all the cheating techniques and cover ups and start SOLOING with CLEAN CHANNEL

During practice , Avoid

a) bends

b) effects pedal . especially wah-wah

c) divebombs

d) shred or using an arpeggio

e) avoid pentatonic scale and the pentatonic box , use major / minor scale instead

No , i am not saying to completely throw the whole thing away . you see , effects , techniques , divebombs should be the ICING of the cake . Not the main dish . get what i mean ?

4) Enjoy the Beauty of Selecting your notes

example . G major scale . G major Chord Progression .

When the Chord is G . Try to Focus on F# note to get the maj7 sound

When the Chord is G . Try to Focus on A note to get Gadd9 sound

When the Chord is G7 ( my fav ) . Focus on F to get the awesome flat7 sound

Hear and recognize the difference . Be tasteful .

5) Experiment more !!

If you ever found a combination like ” OMG , A note on a C Chord sounds soooo awesome! ”

write it down , use it as your signature lick . create your signature lick . USE IT when you’re in a band practice or a gig .
